The Isle of Skye

The Skye bridge with the Cuillins behind

Stromeferry is the perfect base to explore the Isle of Skye. It is 15 mins by car or 20 mins by spectacular train journey to Kyle of Lochalsh for only £3. There are day trips of the Isle of Skye running every day from Kyle of Lochalsh. A budget tour company runs 3 day tours from Edinburgh twice a week staying in Stromeferry from where they have a great day round Skye.

From Kyle of Lochalsh there is the Skye bridge that takes you over to the magical Isle. The bridge replaced the ferry service 15 years ago to the town of Kyleakin. The southern end of the Island you have the Sleat peninsula with the Gaelic college, Clan MacDonald museum, Eilean Iarmain whisky centre and the Armadale ferry to Mallaig and the Harry Potter train route to Fort William.

Heading up through Skye you go through the town of Broadford which has some good craft shops, fuel station, supermarket and the new pedestrian bridge marking the site of the Skye marble railway that used to bring the stone from towards Elgol.

Continuing north you come to the Sligachan river junction where you can turn off for Talisker whisky distillery, great food at the old inn at Carbost, Isle of Skye oysters and Portnalong. In the north west on the Duirnish peninsular you find Dunvegan Castle, the clan seat of the McLeods and the coral beaches. Also Jann'hs cake shop! On the Waternish peninsular you will find the wonderful Stein Inn, wool and fleece shops, potteries and art galleries. Heading over to the Trotternish peninsular you will find the Edinbane hotel which is good for a bite and a pint. Uig (meaning bay in Norse) has a brewery shop, a couple of cafes, the ferry to the Isles of Harris, Lewis and Uist. You may find fairy glen which was used for the movie stardust along with the wonderful Quiraing landscape which is a great spot to have a walk.

At the top of the Trotternish on Skye you will find Duntulm Castle, one of the clan McDonald strongholds and the Monument to Flora Macdonald who helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape over the sea to Skye back in 1745. Also of note are Kilt rock, Staffin with its many churches for many denominations and the capital of the Isle of Skye Portree. Port Righ means the port of the king, so named because King James stopped here to gather support after he had conquered the islands. In Portree you will find a nice harbour down the hill and many shops including the great value bakery.
