Walks in the local area

A sign post marking many of the local Highland walks.

Stromeferry in Lochalsh region is located in the centre of three mountain regions: Kintail and Glen Sheil, the Cuillin hills on Skye and the Torridon mountains. For more details on the many walking routes in the area see Walkhighlands.

For some more local walks see our activity map. You can get more information and borrow maps from us once you are here. We will endeavour to collect the GPS waypoints for our local walks. For the moment here is a list of tried and tested easy short walks.

Stromeferry pebble beach walk to Ralph's land: 1-2 hours

Start along the railway track and follow the shore over a small stream to a flat area of grassland. I have seen red deer and oyster catchers birds on this walk. The dolphins will not be far away and otters cross this walking route regularly but a sighting would be very lucky.

Stromeferry woodland walks: 1-2 hours

These woodland walks were created by the local community in conjunction with the Forestry Commission. There is a great route I like if you walk straight along the main forestry track and take the brown marker post to the right. This goes down through a mossy dell following a small burn (stream) and round to the left to meet up with the end of main forestry track. Once their you can return of keep adventuring up until you cross a couple of smaller tracks and find the replica iron age hut. From there you will find a mossy track short cut back. See Walkhighlands for more details.

Am Meallan forestry tracks: 1.5-2.5 hours

This is a large area of plantation forestry around Am Meallan hill. They are good gravel tracks. At first there is a bit of a hill but it then winds round the glen. Take the first track to the right to head back via Achmore village and pop into the dairy. Ask to borrow a map. Suitable for mountain biking too.

Portchullin circuit from Stromeferry: 2-2.5 hours (1-1.5hrs from Achmore)

This easy-going circuit from Achmore village leads down the beautiful shores of Loch Carron. The outward leg crosses wet pastures below the steep crags of Creag Mhaol to reach the hamlet of Portchullin with its fine views across the water before returning to Achmore along a beech-lined lane. See Walkhighlands for more details.

Balmacara Woodland circuit: 2-3 hours

Scenic forest trail waymarked by the National Trust; a mix of different woodland with good views in places. See Walkhighlands for more details.

Plockton Crags and the two lochs: 2.5-3.5 hours

You can take the 10 minute train journey from Stromeferry to Duncraig to start this walk. The transmitter mast on Carn a Bhealaich Mhoir is prominent in views from Plockton; reaching it is a much easier walk than might be expected. The walk has stunning views and passes two attractive lochs. See Walkhighlands for more details.
